Not every volcano arises in a valley with no mountain blown up so that you can watch it from the surrounding hills constituting natural stadium-like bleachers or even walk down to touch the lava day 0 or possibly get hit by it if you approach one of the craters too close.
The infernal landscape was indeed terrifying in a way but the actual feeling you get there is like attending the most visually and sonically satisfying festival in your life. Sharing the experience with a tiny fraction of the world population fortunate enough to live or happen to be there at the same time amid travel restrictions adds up to a particularly meaningful sensation after a year of covid isolation.
Poles are the biggest minority in Iceland and accidentally I, a filmmaker-expatriate, ended up being there at the same time. The fact that 'our nation is like lava' and the engaging romanticism of the scenery prevented me from referring to any other composer but Fryderyk Chopin and made me let one of his most beautiful nocturnes enlighten the night along with the volcano awaken after 800 years of dormancy.
