Margot Cavret was born in Rennes, in 1995. She began her studies with a HND in light and camera for television and cinema, which she validated in 2014, and during which she directed her first short film, entitled La Source. She also occasionally participated in a web series entitled Les Madlord, as director of photography, cameraman and actress.
After a year of theorical studies, validating a license in Cinema History at Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University, she resumed practical studies, taking a master’s degree in nature and environment documentary filmmaking, in 2016. She directed several short documentaries there: Les Plumes du Rivage, which she co-directed with two other students, then Jamais Plus, her graduation film. She pursue her interest in environmental documentaries by co-directing, during her first year of studies at ENS Louis-Lumière, the short film Ahmed et les Oiseaux.
She obtained a Certificate of professional competence as a cinema projectionist in 2017, then graduated from ENS Louis-Lumière in 2020. During this course, she had the opportunity to make two short films: Mes Amis à Quatre Pattes in 2018, and Alice à l’Heure du Thé, in 2019. She takes part in many other films at technical jobs, in particular Les Lignes Courbes for which she is cameraman, and Les Rituels for which she is director of photography in 2019. Both films were selected at the “Côté Court” film festival in Pantin. The Film To Turn Off The Stars is produced as a graduation film of the ENS Louis-Lumière. It accompanies her thesis, “the practice of image in stop-motion animation cinema”, which was awarded the maximum mark during its defence.
Since leaving school, she mainly works as a camera assistant. She was third assistant camera for the feature film Murder Party, directed by Nicolas Pleskof, which will be released in theatres in March. She was second assistant camera for the short films République (directed by Simon Bouisson in 2018), Emmanuel (directed by Benjamin Vu in 2020), Zone Blanche (directed by Alexia Portal in 2021), as well as for the web-series Merci De Ne Pas Toucher (by Hortense Belhôte and directed by Cecilia de Arce, in 2020). In 2021, she was first assistant camera on several short films: SexyClara93, directed by Medhi Toulmout; Fausse Route, directed by Adriana Soreil; and Le Sanglier, directed by Jules Pourchet. Finally, her graduation work in stop-motion opened her to animation cinema: she was director of photography for the short film Sève by Emma Andrews in 2020, as well as for the short film Les Humains Sont Cons Quand Ils S’Empilent by Laurène Fernandez in 2021.
