An experimental narrative film using methods from the Soviet montage theory to tell the story. A man meets a woman to play a game of chess. The film aims to relate a narrative with barely any dialogue or sound, using only clever editing, tempo manipulation, and motivated use of different lenses, all while allowing actors only limited expression. The resulting experience is an exploration of montage techniques, which attempts to demonstrate that editing does not only make a story possible, it also tells it. The title has a personal significance to the director. "Shards" symbolize all the snippets of video material that were painstakingly assembled into a sum bigger than its individual parts. It felt like putting together the shards of a broken vase
