Kano 4 is an animated short that tells my personal story of surviving a severe war injury in Syria only 4 days before I graduated from the University of Damascus.
On SEP 11, 2015, my life completely stopped when a rocket hit my house in Damascus. I was severely injured, I almost lost both of my legs, and nobody knows how I survived. My doctors told me that I would never walk again. I made my peace with the idea because I was extremely grateful to stay alive and that my story wasn’t going to end 4 days before achieving the very first goal in my life.
My university professors noticed that my stubbornness to stay alive to graduate played a main role in my survival, so they decided to hold my graduation ceremony in my hospital room on the due date.
I stayed in the hospital for almost 4 months, I never lost hope, and after many surgeries, I was able to stand up on my feet again. It took me 4 years to learn how to walk without any help. Even though I still use the crutches occasionally, I am so proud of being up on my feet regardless of the pain.
It took me another 4 years to be able to go back to the university to continue my higher education and graduate once more, outside of the hospital, and up on my feet.
I learned so much from this experience, but most importantly, I learned that we all have a superpower to do the impossible and we can find it by focusing on the love and support of the people that we have in our lives.
The number four repeats a lot in my story thus the title in Arabic reads "Kano 4" which means "They were 4"
