Per tradition, villages celebrate Chinese New Year with lively firework displays, but the presence of a man-eating monster, Nian Shou, casts a dark shadow over one village. To pacify the beast, the village started a tradition of human sacrifice, but things change when a special little girl called Little Apple is chosen as a tribute. With bright eyes and a cheeky demeanor, she playfully engages the beast. Surprised, Nian Shou is intrigued by her lack of fear, but the loud fireworks trigger his aggression once again during their interaction. At the last minute, Little Apple plugs his ears with the fruit offerings, thus dampening the loud firework noises and relieving the beast’s distress. After finding the root cause of his violence borne out of fear, the beast and the girl are finally able to enjoy a New Year's celebration in peace.
